Carry A Geigerrig and Never Suck Again.

Usually when a power outage occurred in our area, we have to call VECO and usually we received  a busy signal when too many calls were made at the same time by other customers.  Now, all we have to do is simply send out a text message.  VECO will reply within a minute, with a text message with information on the cause of the outage and restoration time.  Then VECO will dispatch its e-crew to the customer’s sites to check the cause of the power outage and will fix it for power restoration.

The Aboitiz Group is taking its efforts to reduce carbon footprint a step higher by partnering with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Cebu City Government in celebrating Earth Hour 2012.

On March 31, the Aboitiz Group and its partners will join the rest of the country and the world in shutting off lights for an hour, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., as a way to conserve energy and lessen carbon dioxide emissions.

In line with this year’s Earth Hour theme “Uniting Filipinos to Protect the Planet,” the WWF will present a live streaming broadcast of the other Earth Hour activities taking place in Manila and Davao. It will also show video messages of President Benigno Aquino III and international leaders of WWF.

Also before lights will be shut off, Earth Hour co-founder Andy Ridley will deliver his keynote message, which will also be shown through live streaming.

Activities in Cebu will kick off with essay-writing and poster-making contests among high school and college students, respectively, at The Persimmon Plus in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City. There will also be an eco-bazaar that will display items from recycled waste and organic food.

At 5:30 p.m., Aboitiz Group team members and residents of Cebu City’s 80 barangays will walk from the Fuente Osmeña to the Plaza Independencia as their way of supporting global environmental initiatives.

One of the world’s major event to look forward this March 2012 is the Earth Hour Celebration. Earth hour has been celebrated for 5 years now around the Globe. This major global celebration began in 2007 in a city. Then it has celebrated by other cities around the world since then. As of last year it has involved to 5251 cities reaching 1.8 billion people from 135 countries in seven continents. The success of this movement is very impressive as it did captured the attention of the world.

A year after, the movement also started in the Philippines. In 2008, when I was still employed in Hewlett-Packard Philippines, one of the major IT companies in the world. Weeks before the scheduled earth hour celebration that year, we have received a corporate email instructing us, hp employees to participate the event. Back then I was not really interested and even the years that followed, but I do support the goals of the movement.

Though for the past years I was not an active and even did not mind the movement, it was last year’s Earth Hour celebration that made me promised to be active and be a part of this year’s Earth Hour celebration when last year I have celebrated it with my 2 best friends in Ayala, Terraces, Cebu. I found this movement worth of joining as I have realized my obligation to protect Earth. In 2010 and 2011, the movement broke international records in terms of city participation when 1076 and 1661 cities, respectively, joined the event.

This year’s Earth Hour theme: ‘I Will If You Will’ (IWIYW) campaign, aims to get more support on this advocacy from individuals, groups, businesses, institutions and organizations to join with the world in saving the planet.

This years Earth Hour celebration in Cebu is co organized by the City Government of Cebu, Aboitiz and the Climate Change Commission.

The Azkals  achieved another milestone for Philippine football, clinching the historic 3rd Place in the AFC Challenge Cup 2012.  Coming off a heart-breaking loss from a semi-final game against Turkmenistan, the Azklas started strong again, scoring a 3rd minute goal courtesy of a superb ball handling and faking moves by the noted Azkal striker, Phil Younghusband.  Younghusband was able to beat 3 defenders with a fake to the right then moving back to his left and stroked the ball past the Palestine goal keeper.  Palestine was able to equalize five minutes later when Abdelhamid Abuhabib netted his first international goal for his country to tie the count at 1-1. The Azkals continue to keep their composure and keep on pressuring the Palestine defense .  Chieffy Caligdong went down near the goal and earned a penalty for the Philippines at the 23rd minute.  Phil Younghusband was the one who took the penalty kick near the goal and easily netted it at put the Azkals back on the driver set.  The Azkals continue the aggressiveness throughout the half.  Angel Guirado also joined the score-sheet with his own one-on-one incursion, set up by a nice pass from James Younghusband as the Azkals entered the break ahead, 3-1.

On the 2nd half , the Palestine came out strong, netting their 2nd goal at the 67th, 3-2, but the Azkals quickly went on counter with Juani Guirado slotting in his first international goal for Phl off a feed from James Younghusband, 4-2.  The Palestine side continued their unwavering attacks as it paid off on a 78th minute goal after an Azkal defensive lapse.  Fahed Attal, Palestine’s all-time leading scorer, was unmarked on the left side and fired a shot past Azkals goalkeeper Eduard Sacapaño, the 2nd choice Azkal goal keeper, filling-up, suspended first-choice keeper Neil Etheridge, in the 78th minute to cut their deficit back down to just one goal.

Palestine continued to attack and keep the pressure on the Azkals’ defense, as Abuhabib tried for a hat trick with a looping shot on goal, but Sacapaño was able to put a hand on the ball, denying Palestine side on capitalizing the score.  Then on injury time, Palestine attempted with a last-ditch attack, but it proved unsuccessful as the Azkals were able to defend the ball and survived to the win.

The AFC Challenge Cup 2012 campaign proved to be very fruitful for the Azkals and the Philippine Football.  We could have have a chance to fight for the finals and a chance of qualifying to the 2015 AFC Cup that will be held in Australia, but a 2nd half defensive lapses denied us on the final’s match, but never the less, the 3rd place was a historic achievement and this will further boost the Philippine Football dreams of bring our level of football game to a higher level.

Aside from the Philippine national men’s football team’s third-place trophy, Phil Younghusband will also taking home additional awards in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup in Kathmandu, Nepal.  The Azkals star striker will bring home the tournament’s Golden Boot award after leading the competition in goals scored, booting in a total of six goals over five games. He scores 2 goals in  the against Palestine, one goal shy of a hat trick.

AZKALS, the Philippine national men’s football team, carved a new chapter in Philippine football history Tuesday, beating Tajiskistan with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory to enter the semifinals of the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup.

In the first half even if the Persian Red Lions (Tajikistan) most of the time controls  the football, the Azkals were able to have several good looks and were able to get good and close shots at the goal.  Ray Jonsson, Chieffy Caligdong, and Phil Younghusband had good opportunities to deliver goals for the Philippines,  giving busy time for the Tajikistan goal keeper but failed to convert.

But the unthinkable happened on the last minute of the  1st half, conceding a controversial goal just before the whistle blew.  It was a corner throw by Tajikistan that resulted the goal.  The Azkals protested that the goal did not crossed the line, but the officials awarded the goal to the Persian Red Lions making the moral of the Azkals down entering the 2nd Half.

Instead of giving up, the Azkals did not loss hope and fight back.  They enter the 2nd half  and became more aggressive and taking opportunities on counter attacks.  Then on the 54th minute, their hard works paid off, courtesy to the  hustle that striker Angel Guirido made when he stole the football and made a quick pass to the attacking striker Phil Younghusband who easily made the goal when the Goal keeper of Tajikistan was still down and was not able to recover. On the 67th minute Phil Younghusband came up again with another break on the run that could have sealed the game  but his shot hit the post.

In the 80th minute the Azkals came up again with another goal from a header by Angel Guirido of a pass by Phil Young Husband.  The Azkals defense remains strong  for the rest of the game ,denying goal opportunities in every attacks mounted by  Tajikistan.  Neil Etheridge did an excellent goal keeping and organizing the defense.

With the win, the Azkals advance to the cross over semi-finals this coming Friday, March 16, 2012.  They will be facing another strong team, Turkmenistan which topped the other group over Palestine.  On the other game, North Korea will face Palestine.  The whole Azkals team is hopping that they can still do another upset and that James Younghusband and Angel Guirido will be allowed to play by the organizers since they both got 2 Yellow Cards already which means they will be subject for a game suspension. If that will be carried out to the semi-finals, it is still to be known.  Never the less, the win is enough to make us celebrate as we did again another historic win since the 2010 Suzuki Cup semi-finals appearance.

Another exciting event to anticipate this coming  April 27-28, 2012,  as Lapu-Lapu City will kick off again the  2012 Kadaugan Street Party (KSP) celebration. This celebration is held annually in commemoration of the battle of Mactan between Lapu-lapu and the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.  Last year’s Street party celebration was able to draw thousands of participants and party goers.  With the success of last year’s event, the Lapu-Lapu City Government , headed by Councilor Harry Radaza, event’s chief organizer, will again stage a KSP that promises to be  even bigger  and better than before.  The party will be expected to have more bands and live performances, sporting events, great music, delicious food, lots of drinks available and  more fun and surprise activities await.  The event will be held at the M.L. One of the most anticipated event of the Kadaugan Street party is the RAMPADA 2012.   This event event should not be missed and this is  considered as one of the crowd drawers as the beautiful ladies in the island of Lapu-Lapu will showcase the century old traditions with dance and colorful costumes that embodies the beauty of the women in the era of Lapu-Lapu.

And when the clock strikes at 12 on the 28th of April 2012, another fantastic event that everyone should join is the first ever “Philippine Midnight Beer Run” .  The run will be at 3K and 6K.  Participants will have to pay a 100 registration fee, and in return you will have free T-Shirt  after finishing the run.
