Around 11:49 AM, the magnitude 6.7 Earth Quake rocked Negros and Cebu region. I have not personally counted how many seconds it was but, it happened so abrupt that I was not able to noticed it right away, until I felt the strong quake, which prompted me and my housemates to go out from our house. The same quakes were also felt on all parts of Cebu City as well as from the northern part of Cebu Province. Few minutes later it was also reported that the quaked were also felt in the different parts of Negros Province. Employees from the offices in the downtown area were also shocked by the earthquake. This caused panics as people were running out from their offices. The call center agents working in the IT Park as will as employees working in IT park here in Cebu, were also disturbed by the reports and this caused panics as well.
The United States Geological Survey, meanwhile, initially measured the magnitude of the quake at 6.8. It later revised the magnitude at 6.7.
The USGS listed the following areas as the epicenter:
70 kms (44 miles) north from Dumaguete, Negros
79 kms (49 miles) west northwest from Tagbilaran, Bohol
80 kms (50 miles) south southeast from Bacolod, Negros
574 kms (356 miles) south southeast from Manila
The agency said the earthquake had a depth of 46.6 kms.
The USGS has also recorded at least 2 aftershocks from the strong quake.
The first recorded aftershock, which had a magnitude of 4.8, occurred 62 kms north of Dumaguete at 12:03 p.m.
The second aftershock, which had a magnitude of 5.6, was recorded at 12:20 p.m. 71 kms south southeast of Bacolod. Below is the data about the earthquake:
A few hours after the earthquake was felt here in Cebu, after Phivolcs raised Tsunami alert 3 for Negros and Cebu, there were speculations and rumors about a Tsunami build up is in progress spread quickly throughout Metro Cebu. People were running from different locations because of the news that there were already Tsunami attacks in the coastal area of Carbon, Pasil and the South Reclamation Properties area. There was also a report that certain men riding in a motorcycle with a megaphone and were spreading the alleged news that Tsunami attacks were already in progress. But this was also reported that a false alarm. There were also reports of heavy traffics from different parts of Cebu City as the public utility vehicles and private vehicles raced to uptown areas for safety. Some drivers also left their vehicles in the streets that further caused heavy traffics in the city.
The Tsunami Alert 3 were lifted by Phivolcs at 2:30 PM. Around 3:45 PM, Mayor Michael Rama went on Radio to assured the Cebuanos that the city is safe from a Tsunami attack but should always be ready to for any unexpected incidents in relation to the Earthquake felt by the City earlier.
